About Fingertip Injuries

Fingertip and nail bed injuries are among the commonest hand injuries seen in emergency settings. Although the area involved is small, the impact on daily life is significant: fingertips carry dense tactile sensation that helps us write, grip, button clothes and explore objects. Healthy nails also contribute strongly to the cosmetic appearance and protective function of the hand.

These injuries are particularly common in children, often from finger entrapment in closing doors, gates or furniture. Adults sustain fingertip injuries from kitchen knives, machinery and falls. Mechanisms include amputation of the tip, lacerations through the nail bed and crush injuries that disrupt soft tissue, bone and nail matrix in unpredictable patterns.

Allen's classification helps guide treatment. It groups fingertip injuries based on the level of tissue loss and involvement of bone and nail matrix. Type 3 injuries include a fracture of the distal phalanx, while Type 4 injuries involve the nail matrix or lunula. Accurate classification at our Lucknow clinic makes treatment planning more precise and predictable.

Reimplantation of a severed fingertip is sometimes possible if the amputated piece arrives well preserved within an acceptable time. The procedure is technically demanding because of the very small calibre of fingertip vessels, with overall success rates of around 50 to 60 percent. Crush mechanisms, common in fingertip injuries, further reduce the chance of vessel patency.

When reimplantation is not feasible or fails, Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, uses a range of local flaps to resurface the tip, preserve length and protect the nail bed. Patients who undergo attempted reimplantation are monitored closely in hospital for eight to ten days. If the tip shows signs of withering, the part is removed and an appropriate flap reconstruction is performed.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is fingertip reimplantation safe?
Fingertip reimplantation is safe in trained hands, although success rates are around 50 to 60 percent because of small vessel size and crush mechanisms. At Kayakriti, our team uses microsurgery and careful patient selection to maximise the chance of success while minimising complications during the in-hospital monitoring period.
How long is recovery from fingertip surgery?
Most patients return to office work within two to three weeks. Sensory recovery and nail regrowth take several months. Hand therapy plays a key role, especially after flap reconstruction. Final cosmetic and functional outcomes are usually clear about six to twelve months after the original injury.
What does fingertip injury treatment cost in Lucknow?
Cost depends on whether the injury needs simple wound care, nail bed repair, local flap reconstruction or microsurgical reimplantation. After assessment, our team provides a clear, itemised estimate covering surgery, anaesthesia and follow-up. Many families travel to Lucknow for specialist care that combines quality with transparent pricing.
Will my nail grow back normally?
If the nail bed is repaired carefully, the new nail usually grows in close to its original shape. Some ridging, thickening or curvature can persist, especially after crush injuries. Dr. Agarwal, FRCS Edinburgh, sets realistic expectations and offers later revision if the nail or pulp shape is bothersome.
Who is a candidate for reimplantation?
Patients with cleanly amputated fingertips brought in promptly on ice within an acceptable time window are considered for reimplantation. Crush and avulsion mechanisms, contamination and very young or older age can all influence the decision. Each case is reviewed honestly so the most realistic plan is chosen.
