The hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. It is not an impenetrable seal: it has openings for menstrual flow and discharge, and it can tear during exercise, cycling, gynaecological examinations, or other non-sexual activities. The first sexual experience does not always cause pain or bleeding, and many women do not know whether their hymen is intact.

Hymen repair surgery rebuilds the hymenal ring with absorbable sutures.
