Burn scars take many forms. Hypertrophic scars are raised, red and itchy but stay within the original wound boundary. Keloid scar treatment is needed when scars extend beyond the original area, often with persistent pain or itching. White patches result from melanocyte loss after deep burns, leaving pale, sometimes thin skin. Each pattern needs a slightly different approach and timing.

Initial assessment reviews scar age, thickness, colour and symptoms. We photograph the area, identify any associated contractures or hair loss, and ask about itch, pain and self-image. Laser scar treatment, including fractional and pulsed-dye lasers, helps with texture, redness and pigmentation. White patch after burn treatment may use micropigmentation, micro-skin grafting or epidermal cell transfer techniques in stable, mature scars to improve colour match.

Scar revision surgery is reserved for stable, troublesome scars that have not responded adequately to non-surgical measures. Options include simple excision, Z-plasty, W-plasty, full-thickness skin grafts and flap reconstruction for larger areas. Surgery is often combined with steroid injection or radiotherapy when keloid recurrence risk is high, and follow-up is structured to detect early recurrence.

Procedures are planned around scar maturation, daily routine and skin tone. Hospital stay is usually short, often as a day case for smaller scars, and discomfort is well controlled. Patients receive detailed written instructions on dressings, sun protection, scar massage and pressure therapy. Adjuvant laser and injection sessions may continue for several months after surgery.

Long-term outcomes depend on consistent aftercare. Pressure garments, silicone and sun protection make a measurable difference. Reviews continue for at least a year, with photographs documenting progress. We are realistic about results: scars become less visible and less uncomfortable, but never completely disappear.
