Spider veins are small, abnormally enlarged blood vessels that appear as clusters of red, blue, or purple veins, most often on the legs and calf region. After sclerotherapy, the area is dressed with a crepe bandage. Bruising is normal initially and settles over a few weeks. Most patients return to work the day after sclerotherapy. If varicose veins coexist with spider veins, surgery for varicose veins and simultaneous injection sclerotherapy can be performed together. After treatment, regular activity, weight management, avoiding prolonged immobility, and using compression stockings on long flights help prevent new veins. Existing spider veins do not return after treatment, but new ones can develop over time and may need a top-up session.
